Choosing Stone Textures for 3D Renders and Mood Boards
Natural stone textures play a major role in the realism and visual impact of 3D renders, architectural visualizations and mood boards. Whether you're working with marble, travertine, onyx, limestone, granite or other Turkish natural stones, choosing the right high-resolution texture is essential.
If you’re new to Turkish stones, start with our introduction: Introduction to Turkish Natural Stones.
1. Choose the Correct Finish for the Intended Atmosphere
Different finishes affect how a material will appear in a render. For example:
- Polished marble suits luxury interiors, hotel lobbies and reception areas.
- Honed surfaces are ideal for contemporary, matte-finish concepts.
- Brushed or tumbled travertine conveys rustic, natural warmth.
Learn more about finishes: Natural Stone Finishes Guide.
2. Select Textures That Reflect Real Material Variation
Stones like Tundra Grey, Milas Lilac, Bilecik Beige or Marmara Equator have significant natural variability. Using overly uniform textures will make renders look artificial.
3. Pay Attention to Vein Direction
Veining direction dramatically affects realism. For materials like vein-cut travertine or striped Marmara marble, always align the vein direction with the installation layout. More details here: Understanding Vein Direction.
4. Use High-Resolution Scans or Photographs
The more detailed the texture, the better the outcome in 3D visualization. Low-resolution images cause pixelation and repetitive tiling patterns.
5. Match Textures with Real Material Samples
Ensure that the texture file corresponds to actual slabs or tiles available from your supplier. This avoids discrepancies during actual material procurement.

6. Consider the Purpose of the Visualization
For mood boards, the focus is on color harmony. For architectural renders, material fidelity and accurate reflections become more critical.
7. Use Multiple Texture Maps
For the best rendering quality, include:
- Diffuse map (color)
- Normal/height map (texture depth)
- Roughness map (shine/reflection)
